Target tags vs discovery tags

Use both kinds of search paths

Target tags are focused phrases for ready-to-buy shoppers. Discovery tags are broader but still relevant paths that help nearby shoppers find the listing.

Balance the final set

  1. Use target tags for exact buyer intent, like product type plus recipient or occasion.
  2. Use discovery tags for nearby search paths that are still relevant to your product.
  3. Avoid filling all slots with only broad terms or only narrow terms.
  4. Recheck that each tag has distinct meaning and is not a small variation of another slot.

Read early performance correctly

If your listing gets impressions but weak clicks, tighten target tags. If impressions are very low, expand discovery coverage carefully.

Apply the tags in Etsy

After balancing both groups, copy tags into Etsy and monitor early changes.
